The South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) is a Statutory Body that regulates the Social Service Professions in terms of the Social Service Professions Act 110, 1978, as amended.

Two professional boards have been established, namely-

The Professional Board for Social Work.

The Professional Board for Child and Youth Care

Social workers and Social auxiliary workers are the only professional group currently registered with the SACSSP.

The regulations to enable Child and Youth Care workers to register at Auxiliary level with the Council  was submitted to the Minister of Social Development, but it was unfortunately not finalised due the Professional Board for Child and Youth Care not being in agreement with the decision of the Council. The Board wanted the Diploma and B-Tech degree to be registered at professional level, whilst it is not recognised as a professional qualification by the SACSSP and the CHE.

The NQF level 7 qaulification the SGB-CYC developed is still not approved by SAQA.
